Key Facts

Breast augmentation is surgery that places a breast implant beneath breast tissue or chest muscle to change breast volume. Implant type, placement and incision options are selected after an individual assessment, and breast implants require ongoing monitoring because they are not lifetime devices.

What is Breast Augmentation?

Understanding Breast
Augmentation

Breast augmentation, also called augmentation mammaplasty, is surgery that places an implant to change breast volume. The implant may sit beneath the breast tissue, beneath the chest muscle, or in a dual plane position that combines aspects of both. The operation typically takes 1 to 2 hours at an accredited surgical facility in Sydney.

Some adults consider breast augmentation after a change in breast volume following pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight change. Others ask about it because of breast asymmetry or a personal preference for a different volume. Natural differences in breast size and shape are normal. Consultation is used to discuss what surgery may and may not change, along with the risks and long-term responsibilities of having an implant.

Important Information

Risks & Complications

All surgical procedures carry risks. Potential risks and complications of Breast Augmentation are outlined below and will also be discussed in detail during consultation.

For broader information about surgical risk, visit the General Risks and Complications page.

Who Is It For?

Reasons Patients Consider
Breast Augmentation

Volume Change After Pregnancy

Pregnancy and breastfeeding can change breast volume. Timing, future pregnancy plans and tissue quality are considered during assessment.

Volume Change After Weight Change

Weight change may alter breast volume and skin. A stable weight is generally preferred before elective surgery is planned.

Breast Asymmetry

Natural breast asymmetry is common. An assessment considers whether an implant procedure could change it and what asymmetry may remain.

Personal Preference

An adult may have a personal preference for a different breast volume. The decision should be their own and made after informed discussion.

Implant Options

Implant Types, Shapes and
Surfaces

Breast implants may contain silicone gel or saline. Saline implants have a silicone outer shell filled with sterile saline, while silicone implants contain silicone gel. Implants may also be round or anatomical in shape, and their outer surface may be smooth or textured. These features affect how a device behaves and the risks and monitoring that need to be discussed.

In 2019, the Therapeutic Goods Administration suspended the supply of certain textured breast implants and tissue expanders and imposed conditions on others after reviewing the risk of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma, known as BIA-ALCL. The action did not apply to every textured implant. Current availability and regulatory status need to be checked when a procedure is planned.

Surgical Options

Placement and
Incision Options

The position of an implant and the incision used to place it are separate decisions. General placement options include:

  • Subglandular placement: beneath the breast tissue and above the chest muscle.
  • Submuscular placement: beneath the chest muscle.
  • Dual plane placement: a position that combines aspects of subglandular and submuscular placement.

General incision options include:

  • Inframammary: in the fold beneath the breast.
  • Periareolar: at the edge of the areola.
  • Axillary: in the armpit.

These are options, not a statement that every approach is used or is suitable for every patient. The plan is chosen at consultation after considering anatomy, skin and breast tissue, implant characteristics, medical history, scarring and the risks of each approach.

Long-Term Care

Device Monitoring and the
ABDR

Breast implants are not lifetime devices. Future surgery may be required because of rupture, capsular contracture, implant movement, symptoms, a change in preference or another clinical reason. Follow-up and any imaging recommended for the implant type form part of ongoing care, even when there are no symptoms.

The Australian Breast Device Registry collects information about breast device procedures, with patient consent, to support national safety monitoring. Patients can ask how their device details may be recorded, how privacy is managed and how registry follow-up works.

The Process

Your Breast Augmentation
Process

01

Booking and GP Referral

Patients must be aged 18 or older. A GP referral is needed to attend the consultation, but it is not needed to book an appointment.

02

First Consultation

Dr Konrat reviews medical history, breast anatomy, the patient's reasons for considering surgery and the limits and risks of the available options. Implant, placement and incision considerations are discussed. A written quote is given at this first consultation, with implant, facility and anaesthetist fees itemised.

03

Second Consultation and Cooling-Off

At least two pre-operative consultations with Dr Konrat are required, with at least one held in person. Informed consent is completed at the second consultation. A seven-day cooling-off period follows. No deposit is accepted and no surgery date is booked until that period has passed.

04

Procedure and Follow-Up

Breast augmentation is performed under general anaesthesia at an accredited surgical facility in Sydney and typically takes 1 to 2 hours. The planned implant, placement and incision are confirmed for the individual patient. Follow-up focuses on wound healing, symptoms, activity guidance and longer-term device monitoring.

Recovery & Aftercare

What to Expect
After Surgery

Recovery varies between individuals. These timeframes are a general guide only. Dr Konrat provides instructions for wound care, support garments, medicines, activity and follow-up based on the procedure performed and the patient's recovery.

01
Week 1

Early Recovery

Swelling, bruising, tightness and discomfort are common. Rest, take prescribed medicines as directed and follow the instructions for dressings and support garments. Seek advice promptly about unexpected or worsening symptoms.

02
Week 1 to 2

Light Daily Activity

Some patients return to desk-based work during this period, depending on their work and recovery. Lifting and strenuous activity remain restricted until reviewed.

03
Week 3 to 6

Gradual Activity Increase

Activity may increase gradually. Heavy lifting, strenuous exercise and upper-body training should not resume until Dr Konrat confirms that healing is adequate.

04
Following Months

Settling and Monitoring

Swelling and tissue position continue to change as healing progresses. Scars mature over time. Longer-term care includes monitoring for implant-related symptoms and attending recommended follow-up or imaging.

Important: Contact the clinic immediately if you experience excessive bleeding, severe pain, or signs of infection. Detailed aftercare instructions will be provided before and after your procedure.
