Inverted Nipple Correction (Inverted Nipple Surgery)
with Dr Georgina Konrat
Dr Georgina Konrat (MBBS, FACCSM) performs inverted nipple surgery at her Bondi Junction clinic, correcting nipples that retract inward using techniques tailored to the severity of the inversion.
Key Facts
Inverted nipple surgery is a procedure designed to correct nipples that retract inward rather than pointing outward. The condition can affect one or both nipples and may be present from birth or develop later in life. The procedure releases shortened milk ducts or fibrous bands that pull the nipple inward. Inverted nipples affect an estimated 10–20% of the population and can be corrected with a minor surgical procedure.

A Procedure to Correct
Nipple Inversion
Inverted nipple surgery is a procedure designed to correct nipples that retract inward rather than pointing outward. The condition can affect one or both nipples and may be present from birth (congenital) or develop later in life due to changes such as breastfeeding, ageing, or previous surgery.
The procedure works by releasing the shortened milk ducts or fibrous bands that pull the nipple inward, allowing the nipple to project naturally. The surgical approach varies depending on the severity of the inversion.
Important: If a previously normal nipple becomes inverted without an obvious cause, it is important to seek medical assessment to rule out any underlying condition before considering surgery.

Grades of Nipple
Inversion
Nipple inversion is generally classified into three grades, which help determine the most appropriate treatment approach:
Grade 1 (Mild)
The nipple can be pulled out manually and may stay projected for a period of time. Milk ducts are usually intact.
Grade 2 (Moderate)
The nipple can be pulled out but retracts when released. There may be some fibrosis and the milk ducts may be mildly affected.
Grade 3 (Severe)
The nipple is significantly retracted and cannot be pulled out manually. Milk ducts are typically shortened and fibrosis is more extensive.
During your consultation, Dr Konrat will assess the grade of inversion and discuss the most suitable surgical technique for your situation.
Your Inverted Nipple Correction (Inverted Nipple Surgery)
Process
Consultation & Referral
A GP referral is required. Two consultations (at least one in person) are needed before surgery. Mandatory 7-day cooling-off period applies.
Pre-Operative Preparation
Dr Konrat encourages patients to seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner before proceeding with any surgical procedure.
The Day of Surgery
Performed under local anaesthesia as a day procedure. A small incision is made at the base of the nipple and fibrous tissue is carefully divided. Takes approximately 30 minutes to one hour.
Recovery & Follow-Up
A protective dressing or splint may be applied to maintain the nipple in its corrected position during healing. Most patients return to normal activities within a few days.
What to Expect
After Surgery
Recovery following inverted nipple surgery is generally straightforward. Most patients experience mild discomfort, tenderness, and swelling around the nipple area in the first few days.
Rest & Initial Healing
Mild discomfort, tenderness, and swelling around the nipple area are common. Pain relief medication will be prescribed.
Gradual Improvement
The nipple area may remain tender. A protective dressing or splint should be worn as directed.
Return to Activities
Most patients return to normal activities within a few days. Strenuous exercise should be avoided for two to three weeks.
Follow-Up Appointments
Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments so Dr Konrat can monitor healing and address any concerns.
