What chin and neck liposuction is

Chin and neck liposuction is suction lipectomy — the same surgical technique used for liposuction elsewhere on the body — applied to the submental area (directly under the chin) and the neck. Fine cannulas are used to remove a localised deposit of fat that contributes to fullness under the jawline, in patients where this fullness has not responded to diet and exercise.

It is a facial-area application of the broader liposuction procedure Dr Georgina Konrat performs at her Bondi Junction practice in Sydney, rather than a separate surgical technique.

Who tends to be a good candidate

The same general liposuction candidacy principles apply, adapted to the anatomy of the chin and neck:

  • A localised fat deposit under the chin or in the neck that has persisted despite a reasonable approach to diet and exercise.
  • A stable weight. Liposuction is a contouring procedure for specific areas, not a weight-loss intervention.
  • Reasonable skin elasticity. Because liposuction removes fat rather than tightening skin, the quality of the overlying skin has a significant effect on the outcome.
  • Realistic expectations about what fat removal alone can achieve, particularly where the fullness under the chin is partly related to skeletal profile (such as a recessed chin) rather than fat alone.

Not every patient who wants a more defined jawline is a straightforward liposuction candidate. Some patients are better suited to a different procedure, or a combined approach, which is why an in-person assessment matters more here than a general description can convey.

How it is assessed

At consultation, Dr Konrat examines the chin and neck area directly, assessing the amount and distribution of fat, the quality and elasticity of the overlying skin, and the underlying skeletal profile. This assessment determines whether liposuction alone is likely to achieve a worthwhile change, or whether the fullness is better explained by another factor that liposuction would not address.

A GP referral is required before the first consultation, in line with current AHPRA requirements for cosmetic procedures. Two consultations (with at least one in person) are required before surgery, followed by a mandatory seven-day cooling-off period.

How the procedure is performed

Chin and neck liposuction is typically performed under local anaesthesia with sedation, though the most appropriate anaesthetic approach depends on the individual case and whether it is combined with any other procedure. A tumescent solution is infiltrated into the treatment area to reduce bleeding and bruising, and fine cannulas are used through small, carefully placed entry points to remove the fat deposit.

Because the treatment area is small and the anatomy delicate, the technique is more precise than liposuction on larger body areas, but the underlying principle — mechanical removal of fat through a fine cannula — is the same.

Recovery basics

Recovery from chin and neck liposuction generally follows the same pattern as liposuction elsewhere in the body, scaled to a smaller treatment area:

  • A compression garment is typically worn under the chin and around the neck for a period after surgery, to support the tissue and reduce swelling.
  • Bruising, swelling, and firmness in the treated area are common in the first one to two weeks.
  • Most patients return to office-based work within about a week, once swelling and bruising have settled enough to be comfortable in public.
  • Strenuous exercise is usually avoided for several weeks, as advised at your follow-up appointments.
  • Final results continue to settle over the following months as residual swelling resolves.

Dr Konrat provides detailed written aftercare instructions and schedules follow-up appointments to monitor healing.

Risks and considerations

As with liposuction elsewhere, risks include bruising and swelling, contour irregularity, asymmetry, areas of altered or reduced sensation that may be temporary or longer-term, and rarely more significant complications. Because the chin and neck sit close to visible structures and the platysma muscle, careful technique and realistic patient selection are particularly important in this area. All relevant risks are discussed individually at consultation, in proportion to what is being planned.

Costs and Medicare

A personalised quote is provided after consultation, covering the practitioner fee, facility and anaesthetic fees, and the compression garment. Chin and neck liposuction is a cosmetic procedure, and Dr Georgina Konrat is a cosmetic doctor — Medicare and private health insurance rebates do not apply through her practice.

Next step

If a fuller discussion of liposuction as a procedure is useful before booking, the liposuction page covers technique, anaesthesia options, recovery, and the areas that can be treated more broadly. Chin and neck liposuction can also be discussed alongside other facial procedures, such as blepharoplasty, where relevant to your overall goals.
