Otoplasty at Our
Eastern Suburbs Clinic
Otoplasty — commonly referred to as ear pinning — is a surgical procedure that repositions or reshapes the ears. It is performed to reduce ear prominence, improve symmetry, or address structural concerns that have been present since childhood.
Dr Konrat's Bondi Junction practice is located within walking distance of Bondi Junction train station and the Westfield bus interchange. Patients travelling from Bondi, Double Bay, Rose Bay, Randwick, Woollahra, and surrounding Eastern Suburbs areas can reach the clinic within minutes. Limited street parking and paid parking at Westfield are also available.
During your consultation at the clinic, Dr Konrat will assess your ear anatomy, discuss the changes you are hoping to achieve, and explain the surgical approach, expected recovery, and associated risks. A GP referral is required prior to booking a consultation.
Risks & Complications
All surgical procedures carry risks. Potential risks and complications of Otoplasty (Ear Pinning) are outlined below and will also be discussed in detail during consultation.
For broader information about surgical risk, visit the General Risks and Complications page.
Reasons Patients Consider
Otoplasty (Ear Pinning)
Prominent Ears
Ears that sit further from the head than desired, often caused by underdeveloped antihelical folds or an enlarged conchal bowl.
Ear Asymmetry
A noticeable difference in shape, size, or position between the left and right ears that has been present since birth or childhood.
Self-Consciousness
Feeling uncomfortable with ear appearance in everyday situations, such as wearing hair up, during sport, or in photographs.
Previous Ear Surgery
Revision otoplasty may be considered if a prior procedure did not achieve the desired outcome or if the ears have shifted over time.
Congenital Ear Irregularities
Conditions such as lop ear, cup ear, or shell ear that affect the shape or folding of the outer ear cartilage.
Adult or Paediatric Patients
Otoplasty can be performed on adults and children (typically from age 7 onwards, when ear cartilage is sufficiently developed).

Your Otoplasty (Ear Pinning)
Process
GP Referral & Consultation
Obtain a referral from your GP, then book a consultation at the Bondi Junction clinic. Dr Konrat will examine your ears and discuss your goals, the surgical plan, and any risks involved.
Pre-Operative Preparation
Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements for two weeks prior. Arrange transport home on the day of surgery. Plan for one to two weeks off work or school.
Surgery Day
Otoplasty is performed under local anaesthesia with sedation, or general anaesthesia. The procedure typically takes one to two hours. Incisions are made behind the ear to minimise visible scarring.
Recovery & Follow-Up
A protective headband is worn for several weeks. Initial swelling and bruising subsides within one to two weeks. Follow-up appointments are held at the Bondi Junction clinic.
What to Expect
After Surgery
Recovery from otoplasty varies between individuals. Most patients can return to work or school within one to two weeks, though a protective headband must be worn as directed by Dr Konrat.
Initial Rest
Mild to moderate discomfort, managed with prescribed pain relief. A head bandage protects the ears. Avoid sleeping on your side.
Early Healing
Swelling and bruising gradually reduce. The bandage is replaced with a lighter headband. Light activities can resume. Most patients return to desk-based work.
Gradual Return to Activity
Continue wearing the headband at night. Avoid contact sports and activities that could bend or impact the ears. Exercise can gradually resume with Dr Konrat's guidance.
Final Settling
Ears settle into their final position. Minor swelling resolves. Scars behind the ears continue to fade over several months.
Important: Contact the clinic immediately if you experience excessive bleeding, severe pain, or signs of infection. Detailed aftercare instructions will be provided before and after your procedure.
