A Surgical Procedure for
Localised Fat Reduction
Liposuction removes localised fat deposits to change shape in selected areas. It is designed for areas that have not responded to diet, exercise, and general weight management, rather than as a treatment for generalised obesity.
Areas that may be treated include the chin, neck, jowls, cheeks, arms, thighs, buttocks, knees, hips, and abdomen. The final outcome depends not only on fat removal, but also on skin quality and elasticity.
Risks & Complications
All surgical procedures carry risks. Potential risks and complications of Suction Lipectomy (Liposuction) are outlined below and will also be discussed in detail during consultation.
For broader information about surgical risk, visit the General Risks and Complications page.
Reasons Patients Consider
Suction Lipectomy (Liposuction)
Localised Fat Deposits
Areas of persistent fullness that have not improved with diet and exercise.
Stable Weight
Best suited to patients who are close to a stable weight rather than actively trying to lose a large amount of weight.
Good Skin Elasticity
Skin quality influences how smoothly the treated area settles after fat removal.
Body Shape Goals
Patients seeking a change in body shape rather than overall weight loss.
Good General Health
Suitable candidates should be in good health and able to follow recovery instructions carefully.
Realistic Expectations
Liposuction aims for improvement rather than perfection and does not treat cellulite or every concern about body shape.
How Liposuction
Is Performed
In many cases, liposuction is performed under simple or light sedation, although general anaesthesia may also be appropriate. A numbing tumescent solution is infiltrated into the treatment area to reduce bleeding and bruising.
Tumescent Fluid
The tumescent solution is placed through a fine cannula and helps numb the area while reducing blood flow during surgery.
Fat Removal
Small cannulas are moved through the area to loosen and remove localised fat deposits. Temporary drainage of blood-stained fluid from the small skin openings is normal in the first 1 to 3 days.
Treatment Planning
Dr Konrat will discuss the limits of treatment, including the fact that liposuction does not tighten loose skin or remove cellulite.
Compression, Massage &
Recovery
A compression garment is usually worn day and night for 2 weeks, then during the day for another 4 weeks. This helps support the tissues and reduce swelling while the treated area settles.
Firmness, surface irregularities, and swelling are common early on. Light massage and Endermologie are discussed in the clinic documents as ways to support smoothing and lymphatic drainage in the recovery period.
Final settling is gradual and may take 6 months or longer to fully appreciate.
Your Suction Lipectomy (Liposuction)
Process
Consultation & Referral
A GP referral is required. Two consultations (at least one in person) are needed before surgery. Dr Konrat will assess your goals, treatment areas, skin quality, and overall suitability. A mandatory 7-day cooling-off period applies.
Pre-Operative Preparation
Smoking cessation, medication review, and planning for your first night at home are important. You should organise a responsible adult to transport you and stay with you after surgery.
The Day of Surgery
Liposuction is performed as day surgery. Simple or light sedation is commonly used, although general anaesthesia may be appropriate in some cases. Tumescent fluid is infiltrated and fat is removed through small cannulas.
Recovery & Follow-Up
Compression garments, dressings, and follow-up reviews are used to guide recovery. Most patients return to work within about a week, with mild exercise gradually resuming after that.
What to Expect
After Surgery
Recovery after liposuction varies with the areas treated and the extent of surgery. Bruising, swelling, tenderness, and firmness are common early on, and the treated areas continue to settle gradually over months.
Drainage & Garment Wear
Blood-stained fluid may drain from the small skin openings and is expected. A compression garment is fitted and worn full-time.
Early Review
Dressings are checked and any drains, stitches, or clips are removed if required. Most patients can return to work at around this stage depending on the extent of treatment.
Swelling Continues to Settle
The garment is usually worn day and night for 2 weeks, then during the day for another 4 weeks. Mild exercise may resume progressively. Some treated areas, especially lower legs, can stay swollen for longer.
Final Settling
Surface irregularities, firmness, and residual swelling continue to settle. Final settling may not be complete for 6 months or longer.
Important: Contact the clinic immediately if you experience excessive bleeding, severe pain, or signs of infection. Detailed aftercare instructions will be provided before and after your procedure.
