What is Breast Reduction?

A Surgical Procedure for
Comfort & Proportion

Breast reduction, or reduction mammaplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to reduce the size and weight of the breasts by removing excess tissue, fat and skin. The procedure may also involve repositioning the nipple-areola complex to a higher position on the chest wall.

For some individuals, large breasts can contribute to ongoing physical discomfort that does not respond to non-surgical measures such as physiotherapy, supportive bras or weight management. In these cases, breast reduction surgery may be considered as an option to address the underlying cause of symptoms.

Important Information

Risks & Complications

All surgical procedures carry risks. Potential risks and complications of Reduction Mammaplasty (Breast Reduction) are outlined below and will also be discussed in detail during consultation.

For broader information about surgical risk, visit the General Risks and Complications page.

Who Is It For?

Reasons Patients Consider
Reduction Mammaplasty (Breast Reduction)

Back, Neck or Shoulder Pain

Chronic discomfort that may not respond adequately to conservative treatments such as physiotherapy or pain management.

Skin Irritation

Rashes, chafing or fungal infections beneath the breast crease caused by moisture and friction.

Difficulty with Physical Activity

Limitations during exercise or daily movement due to breast size and weight.

Bra Strap Grooving

Deep, painful indentations in the shoulders from supportive bras required to manage breast weight.

Posture Issues

Postural changes that may develop over time as a result of carrying excess breast weight.

Consultation Assessment

During consultation, Dr Konrat will assess your medical history, examine your breast anatomy and discuss whether breast reduction may be appropriate for your circumstances.

Surgical Techniques

Breast Reduction
Techniques

The technique used for breast reduction depends on the amount of tissue to be removed and the individual's anatomy. The two most common approaches are:

Anchor Incision (Inverted T)

Involves an incision around the areola, a vertical incision from the areola to the breast crease, and a horizontal incision along the crease. This technique is commonly used when a larger volume of tissue needs to be removed.

Vertical (Lollipop) Incision

Involves an incision around the areola and a vertical incision downward to the breast crease, without the horizontal component. This may be suitable when a moderate reduction is required.

Dr Konrat will recommend the most appropriate technique based on your anatomy and the degree of reduction being considered. She will explain the rationale for her recommendation during consultation.

Nipple Repositioning

Nipple-Areola
Repositioning

In most breast reduction procedures, the nipple-areola complex is moved to a higher position on the breast mound. This is typically achieved by keeping the nipple attached to a pedicle — a stalk of tissue that aims to maintain blood supply and may help preserve some degree of sensation.

In cases where a very large reduction is required, a free nipple graft technique may be necessary. This involves completely detaching the nipple-areola complex and reattaching it at the new position. With this technique, nipple sensation is typically lost and breastfeeding is not possible afterward.

The approach used will depend on the extent of the reduction and will be discussed during your consultation.
