A Surgical Procedure for
Abdominal Skin & Support
Abdominoplasty is designed to remove excess skin and fat from the abdomen and change abdominal shape. In suitable cases, it can also tighten the inner abdominal musculature. The procedure is often considered after pregnancy, major weight loss, or longstanding skin laxity that has not responded to exercise.
It is not the same as liposuction. Liposuction removes localised fat deposits, while abdominoplasty addresses excess skin and may include muscle repair. In some cases, liposuction is used at the same time to address the waist, flanks, or hips.
Risks & Complications
All surgical procedures carry risks. Potential risks and complications of Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) are outlined below and will also be discussed in detail during consultation.
For broader information about surgical risk, visit the General Risks and Complications page.
Reasons Patients Consider
Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)
Excess Abdominal Skin
Loose or overhanging abdominal skin that has not improved with exercise or weight management.
Post-Pregnancy Changes
Abdominal stretching and skin changes following pregnancy that leave persistent skin laxity or muscle separation.
After Weight Loss
Changes following major weight loss, particularly where there is excess lower abdominal skin.
Abdominal Wall Laxity
Patients who may benefit from abdominal wall tightening as part of their surgical plan.
Stable Weight
Best suited to patients who are close to a stable goal weight rather than planning further significant weight loss.
Good General Health
Suitable candidates should be in good health, with realistic expectations and a willingness to follow recovery instructions carefully.
How a Tummy Tuck
Is Performed
Abdominoplasty usually involves a long curved incision placed low on the abdomen, extending from one hip to the other. The aim is to position the scar where much of it can sit within underwear or swimwear lines.
Skin & Fat Removal
Excess abdominal skin and fat are lifted and removed. The amount removed depends on your anatomy and the degree of skin laxity present.
Muscle Tightening
Where appropriate, the inner abdominal wall is tightened in the midline. This can improve support and abdominal shape, but also means the early recovery period may feel tight or sore.
Additional Liposuction
Liposuction is sometimes used alongside abdominoplasty to address the waist, flanks, or hips. Dr Konrat will discuss whether this is appropriate during consultation.
Dressings, Garments &
Follow-Up
After surgery you may have drains in place for up to the first week. Dressings are reviewed at your early follow-up visits and any visible stitches are usually removed between day 10 and 14.
A compression garment is usually worn day and night for 2 weeks, then during the day for a further 4 weeks. Gentle mobilisation starts early, but strenuous activity, heavy lifting, swimming, and abdominal strain are restricted during the initial healing period.
Seroma checks and scar support are important parts of aftercare. Dr Konrat will explain your individual review schedule, including when you can safely return to more demanding activity.
Your Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)
Process
Consultation & Referral
A GP referral is required. Two consultations (at least one in person) are needed before surgery. Dr Konrat will assess your abdomen, skin laxity, health history, and whether abdominoplasty is appropriate. A mandatory 7-day cooling-off period applies.
Pre-Operative Preparation
Smoking cessation, medication review, and pre-operative planning are important. You should not plan this surgery if you are expecting further pregnancy or significant weight loss. Arrange time off work and a responsible adult to collect you and stay overnight.
The Day of Surgery
Performed under general anaesthesia at an accredited day surgery hospital. Surgery typically takes 2–3 hours. Drains and a support garment are commonly used after the procedure.
Recovery & Follow-Up
Expect at least 2 weeks off work, with gentle walking starting early. Dressings, drains, and wound healing are reviewed in the first 1 to 2 weeks. Strenuous activity usually resumes at about 6 weeks, depending on healing.
What to Expect
After Surgery
Recovery after abdominoplasty requires patience. Tightness, bruising, swelling, and tiredness are common in the early period. Dr Konrat will give you detailed instructions about mobilisation, garments, dressings, and warning signs to watch for.
Rest & Gentle Mobilisation
Rest at home with support, but start gentle walking and hourly calf movement while awake to reduce the risk of clots. Pain relief is usually needed in the first few days.
Early Review
Dressings and wounds are checked. Drains and any negative pressure dressings are commonly removed around this stage if healing is progressing well.
Further Dressing Review
Visible stitches may be removed if required. Seroma checks continue and scar support is introduced as advised.
Gradual Return to Activity
Light household activity usually increases first. Strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, swimming, and abdominal strain are generally delayed until about 6 weeks.
Important: Contact the clinic immediately if you experience excessive bleeding, severe pain, or signs of infection. Detailed aftercare instructions will be provided before and after your procedure.
